Playt

Interactive plate concept for restaurants
Playt was the outcome of an intensive workshop at the Aalto University, Helsinki lead by Sony R+D.

Challenged to create new services for existing toys or new toys for existing services under the theme of "connected toys" we soon focused on parents as our target audience - the parents, of course, being the purchasers of toys.

We sought to create a playful solution to an everyday problem of parents. We identified the limitations of parents to go out in the evenings due to the expense of child-minders and the worry of leaving children behind. We identified the upper-end restaurant as an opportunity for toys.

Playt brings a little magic to the otherwise unengaging and stiflingly strict dinner table. The waiter plays magician as Playt springs to life, presenting images of the childrens menu as well as games and tasks for the child to complete. As well as entertaining Playt also aims to teach the child user about how to behave in this grown-up situation.

Of course the Playt experience doesn't end at the end of the meal. The games and tasks are magically sent to the users home computer at the end of the meal and can be picked up again the next time the family go out.

The concept was presented with a "quick and dirty" interactive prototype that was displayed through a performance(below).
